After WWII we saw the alignment shift to ideology (capitalism/communism).<br /><br />Now we have seen the alliances shift away from ideology and back to interests. It is a "multipolar" world now, where the politics of Beijing, Mumbai, and Rio influence those of DC, Moscow, London, and Paris. <br /><br />Trade was king then, replaced by military might after WWII, and trade is king now.
